The intervention, designed to strengthen self-acceptance and personal growth, was evaluated using Ryff's Well-Being Scale before and after its implementation. Ten young players participated and experienced workshops and activities focused on improving interpersonal relationships and personal development. Despite optimistic expectations, post-intervention results did not reveal statistically significant changes in psychological well-being scores. This finding suggests that, although the intervention was well received and showed positive trends, its impact on the measured indicators of psychological well-being was not significant. The study highlights the complexity of addressing psychological well-being in young athletes and underlines the importance of researching more effective methods to improve mental health in this demographic group
Anthony Quirós Rose Jay Molino Copyright (c) 2025 https://revistas.usma.ac.pa/ojs/index.php/ipc/stats/reportsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2025-05-02 2025-05-02 13 2 21 30 10.37387/ipc.v13i2.411 Constructing an inventory to study the energy literacy of university students https://ipc.org.pa/ojs/index.php/ipc/article/view/412
This article presents the procedure used in the construction of an instrument to study the energy literacy of Panamanian university students, which can be very useful for their professional training with a perspective oriented towards the rational use of energy. The instrument was built considering three variables, one of a cognitive type focused on the understanding of basic scientific and technical concepts about energy, the second of an affective type based on favorable attitudes towards responsible energy consumption and the third of behavioral type that considers the commitment to effective actions to save energy. As a result, the Energy Literacy Inventory (IAE) was obtained, after being subjected to a validation process that included expert judgment and a reliability process through the application of Cronbach's Alpha and McDonald's Omega. Its total reliability, measured by Cronbach's Alpha, is 0.897. The reliability of the instrument by variable or dimension (cognitive, affective and behavioral), measured by both tests, shows different results between them, with the cognitive being the one with the lowest performance in exchange for the rest whose performance is quite satisfactory. The results are discussed, and the respective conclusions are drawn
Manuel Dixon-Pineda Alejandrina Mata-Segreda Copyright (c) 2025 https://revistas.usma.ac.pa/ojs/index.php/ipc/stats/reportsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2025-05-02 2025-05-02 13 2 31 51 10.37387/ipc.v13i2.412 Twenty Years of History: Analysis of Graduates and Dropouts in the Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics Education in Panama https://ipc.org.pa/ojs/index.php/ipc/article/view/413
University dropout represents a critical challenge for educational institutions, negatively impacting both individual and collective development. This research focused on analyzing the dropout factors of students from the bachelor’s degree in mathematics teaching at the University of Panama, from 2014 to 2019. The main objective was to identify the key variables that influence students' decisions to abandon their studies, thus providing a basis for the development of effective retention strategies. The adopted methodology was a quantitative approach, using data collected from student academic records. Simple linear regression and logistic regression models were employed to examine the relationship between dropout rates and variables such as academic index, student geographical location, and duration of studies. The findings revealed that the province of Panama had the highest dropout rate, with 39% of students abandoning their studies. This was primarily attributed to the historical concentration of academic offerings on the central campus and logistical challenges such as transportation. Furthermore, the results indicated that poor academic performance was significantly correlated with dropout, suggesting that difficulties in meeting academic demands play a crucial role in students' decisions to leave university. Interestingly, it was found that some students who initially dropped out returned later to complete their studies, highlighting the importance of flexible policies that allow students to resume their education
Carolina Vejerano Julio Trujillo-González Copyright (c) 2025 https://revistas.usma.ac.pa/ojs/index.php/ipc/stats/reportsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2025-05-02 2025-05-02 13 2 52 60 10.37387/ipc.v13i2.413 Efficacy of the "Las Claras" program in enhancing emotional, psychological, and cognitive capacity in adolescent mothers supported by the Voces Vitales Foundation of Panama https://ipc.org.pa/ojs/index.php/ipc/article/view/414
Adolescent pregnancy poses a challenge for the family, society, the adolescent mother, and the newborn. Furthermore, this condition has consequences that may exacerbate the adolescent's vulnerability and endanger both her survival and that of her infant. Teenage pregnancy accentuates underlying or precipitating risk factors associated with this situation. For this reason, the Voces Vitales Foundation implemented an intervention program for adolescent mothers called "Las Claras", which focuses on psychosocial, emotional, academic, and occupational aspects with the aim of improving the circumstances faced by these young mothers. The study employs a pre-experimental design with pre- and post-intervention assessments to analyze variables such as anxiety, depression, self-esteem, memory, attention, verbal and visual abstract reasoning. The sample consisted of 12 pregnant adolescents, aged 15 to 19, who completed the program. All participants were from the eastern region of Panama City. The results indicate statistically significant differences (p < .05) in psychological variables such as empathy, sociability, social desirability, psychological well-being, attention, processing speed, learning, and memory. Although no significant differences were observed in other variables, there was a noticeable trend toward improvement in scores obtained during the second assessment. In conclusion, the "Las Claras" program, designed for the psychosocial intervention of adolescent mothers, appears to provide benefits not only in psychological aspects and their new maternal role but also fosters changes in brain capacity, enhancing neurocognitive functions such as memory and executive functioning. These improvements are crucial for achieving success, especially in the context of social vulnerability associated with adolescent pregnancy
Abdel A Solís-Rodríguez Yesica Pinzón-Visuetti Copyright (c) 2025 https://revistas.usma.ac.pa/ojs/index.php/ipc/stats/reportsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2025-05-02 2025-05-02 13 2 61 71 10.37387/ipc.v13i2.414 Informal Caregivers: An Essential Pillar in the Fight Against Cancer and its Need for Support https://ipc.org.pa/ojs/index.php/ipc/article/view/408
Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide, with nearly 10 million deaths recorded in 2020. In the Americas, cases rose to 4.2 million in 2022, with a projection of 6.7 million by 2045. Oncology is a multifactorial and multidimensional disease. This means its management requires an interdisciplinary approach involving various healthcare professionals. It is multidimensional not only because it affects cancer patients and the healthcare personnel providing care but also because it impacts their family members, who, in many cases, take on the role of informal caregivers. An informal caregiver (IC) is someone who, without formal training or financial compensation, assumes a significant commitment to caregiving out of emotional ties to the patient. Studies indicate that ICs, predominantly women aged 40 to 73, face high levels of stress, burnout syndrome, and a decline in their quality of life. In Panama, the growing number of cancer cases highlights the urgency of addressing the needs of ICs to ensure their well-being and the quality of care they provide. The country’s current situation and the increasing number of cancer patients emphasize the necessity of recognizing ICs as an essential pillar of the healthcare system. Providing them with training, psychological support, and resources is not only an ethical obligation but also a strategic move to ensure the system's sustainability in the future.
Milagro Del Rosario Rivera Reyes Dioselina Vanegas Copyright (c) 2025 https://revistas.usma.ac.pa/ojs/index.php/ipc/stats/reportsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2025-05-02 2025-05-02 13 2 5 11 10.37387/ipc.v13i2.408
