Abstract

In spite of the fact that the Republic of Panama is a relatively new country (only 112 years of history as an independent nation), the origins of monuments and statues within the Panama City and other townships in the country are subject of controversy, due to the lack of precise documentation. The one that is available is, mostly, scarce and contradictory. The statue of the aboriginal chief Urracá, leader of the ngäbe-buglé revolt against early Spanish colonization, is a clear example of that. Here, we shed light on the exact origins of such an important historical Panamanian monument.
