A partir de su creación en 1948 la Zona Libre de Colón (ZLC) ha operado exitosamente como centro internacional de comercio y trasbordo de mercaderías aprovechando las ventajas de haberse convertido en un centro de comercio entrepót.iii Dichos rasgos afloraron en virtud de seis factores que resultaron claves en expandir las actividades de reexportación y contribuir al desarrollo de la plataforma de servicios en comercio y logística que le ha dado impulso a la economía panameña: (i) un sistema de incentivos basado en un régimen fiscal extraterritorial de transacciones con el exterior, (ii) un alto grado de conectividad,iv (iii) costos de operación y transporte competitivos, (iv) despacho de carga expedito, (v) utilización del dólar norteamericano como moneda y (vi) ventas al por mayor financiadas a crédito.
