Care Infrastructure and Reciprocity in Panamanian Catholic Community Kitchens

This article examines how three Catholic community kitchens in Panama
City are congured as infrastructures of care in contexts of social exclusion and state
withdrawal. Based on a situated and engaged ethnographic approach, it reconstructs the
everyday, ethical, and spiritual practices that sustain life under conditions of structural
precarity. The cases studiedObra Juan Pablo II, Comedor Solidario Santa María del
Camino, and Comedor Jesús en los Pobresreveal that these spaces go beyond traditional
forms of charity and become territories of resistance, symbolic reciprocity, and
embodied citizenship. Within them, care is feminized, politicized, and organized through
an active spirituality, reshaping the role of the Church as a bridging institution. The
ndings show that these community kitchens not only ensure access to food, but also
operate as mechanisms for rebuilding the social fabric, producing citizenship, and sustaining
life. In addition, a marked feminization of care and a weak articulation with the
state are observed, raising important challenges for public policy design. It is concluded
that these experiences constitute emerging forms of social organization that invite a
rethinking of care as a collective right rather than a residual response to exclusion.
