Salud mental e identidad en la diversidad sexual: desafíos y factores de riesgo en personas LGBTQ+

Las personas LGBTQ+ pertenecen a una población vulnerada y experimentan desafíos que afectan, no solo cómo integran su identidad a lo largo de su vida, sino su salud mental. Las disparidades de salud mental en la población sexualmente diversa han sido estudiadas y se evidencia en incidencias de síntomas psicopatológicos mayores en comparación con las personas heterosexuales. Existen distintos factores de riesgo que afectan el funcionamiento psicológico de las personas LGBTQ+, abarcando las experiencias de discriminación, prácticas de conversión de la orientación sexual y de identidad de género, riesgo de suicidio, presencia de síntomas psicológicos, entre otros. No obstante, también se han identificado factores que protegen a la persona LGBTQ+ a tener un desarrollo de su identidad saludable y que mitigan la angustia psicológica. El presente artículo tiene como finalidad explorar los conceptos sobre orientación sexual e identidad de género, entender cómo distintos autores explican la formación de la identidad de la persona LGBTQ+ y por último discutir las implicaciones de ser sexualmente diverso en la salud mental.
