Abstract

Teleneuropsychology is a very recent and emerging branch of psychology. Its emergence and continuous growth have followed the development of communication technologies since the 1970s, such as telephones and computers. Studies show its advantages include an increased clinical attention capacity, a greater number of assessment and treatment alternatives, as well as enhanced productivity for professionals. For patients, it entails improved access to services, better time efficiency, increased flexibility in access to assessment centers, greater comfort, and the possibility of receiving more timely diagnoses. Nevertheless, teleneuropsychology has gained greater prominence in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Restrictions implemented by governments around the world compelled mental health professionals to adapt and provide their services remotely, revealing the need for more studies about teleneuropsychology. In Latin American (LAC) countries, which are characterized by limited access to technology in remote areas and the internet, several researchers noted the lack of studies in the region. These observations underscore the need for generating studies in LAC populations, particularly considering the increase of aging populations worldwide and the increase in prevalence of cognitive impairment. Therefore, the objective of this article is to review teleneuropsychology research conducted in the LAC region, user experiences, as well as the limitations encountered in its application.
